Driving Miss Patti

Every once in a distance while, I can't resist making absurd posts like this. While doing research on an upcoming publishing project, I came across this interview series called 21 Questions by New York Magazine, including one with R&B diva Patti LaBelle. Previously, I had only read all the way through 21 Questions for Sarah Vowell (What's your brand of jeans? "That blue kind"). But that all changed after my friend Rachel spotted this gem in Patti's interview:

When's the last time you drove a car?

It was about 40 years ago, before I got married. My boyfriend at the time, Armstead, was teaching me to drive in his Thunderbird. I drove it into a tree.

At which point Rachel quipped: "Well they spelled your name wrong, but the good news is you look great for your age." I couldn't agree more. See the full-size photo...

Don't Panic

March came in like a lion here in New York, especially for my online projects. It's not the first time in the past year that I've had a sustained burn, and as lip dubbers like Jakob knows, maybe I'm crazy... probably.

Top billing goes to the new online course on Evolution that I helped produce at the Museum. It's a stunning and intense six-week experience that took six months to build (special thanks to Jeremy and Joannou). I launched the spring concert site for Metropolis Ensemble with a completely fresh template. I channeled the 1930s for Global Playground's upcoming event. And stay tuned: I'm about to introduce a whole slew of new work for Braddigan...

Cooking with Aitlin and Bob

Cooking with Aitlin and Bob from Armistead Booker and Vimeo.

This is a gem from the archives: three years ago, I made this impromptu cooking show with my cousins, Caroline and Page, at their house in Long Island. In the show, we decided that Caroline would go by Aitlin, since the "C" feel off her older sister's apron. And Page insisted on being the bumbling sidekick (that ends up being more like a back-seat driver) named Bob, a nickname of hers that comes from when she has a cold and calls out "Mom" because it sounds like "Bob." With the rest of the family looking on, Aitlin and Bob attempt to craft a dessert worthy of MadTV with disasterous consequences. While this is pretty typical fare at their house just about everyday, none of us were expecting the show to turn out this hilarious.

Update: Now featured on Airbag's Longboard. Thanks Greg!

That Special Tambour

John Mayer sat down with Steve Inskeep of NPR Morning Edition to talk about "staying on the noble path" with regard to his music, lyrics, and most importantly, his life.

Look, demanding somebody do anything in this day and age is not going to fly. Kids don't even like being talked to like kids anymore, you know. 'Just give me the option and I'll think about it.' All I want a song to do is just to kind of present an idea. I'm talking about the chemistry of belief and how futile it is to think that you could replace one belief with another belief. The only way that anyone can change a belief is internally.

Nintendo Wii

Nintendo Wii from Armistead Booker and Vimeo.

Last weekend, several friends spent an evening in Midtown Manhattan with a little Nintendo Wii boxing action... which without the context of the screen can be a pretty hilarious visual. Just think what the people in the office across the street must be thinking when they look over. Music: "In the Morning" by Junior Boys.
